ACE is the Automated Commercial Environment for shipments into the USA
ACI is the Advanced Commercial Information system for shipments into Canada
ACE and ACI are systems for (mainly) trucking and transportation companies to electronically report cargo information.
Before ACE and ACI - customs had no idea what driver, what drive, what cargo was coming to the border, and everything was done with paper manifests.
ACE and ACI changed that with Electronic Manifests or eManifest that have to be transmitted ahead of time before the cargo arrives.
This allows customs to determine the risk of cargo before it enters the country.
